Abuja, FCT – Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led a delegation of three former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Saturday. The gathering included Wike’s close allies from the PDP, who were also prominent members of the defunct G5 faction. This group notably diverged from the party’s mainstream leadership in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections.
The former governors present at the meeting were Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State. While the specific details of their discussions remain undisclosed, the meeting is widely perceived as a strategic move towards political realignment in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
It is recalled that ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Minister Wike spearheaded the G5 governors’ campaign against the PDP and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The faction’s primary contention stemmed from their argument that the party’s presidential ticket should have been zoned to the South. The ensuing internal crisis ultimately led the G5 governors to lend their support to Bola Tinubu, then the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Following his victory, President Tinubu appointed Nyesom Wike as the Minister of the FCT.
