PDP releases timetable as RSIEC shifts deadline for primaries

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has now fixed its primaries for February 11 and 14, according to an announcement made during the twice weekly prayer and worship session tagged “One Hour with Jesus”. The State Deputy Chairman, of the party in Rivers State, Chukwuemeka Aaron, who spoke on behalf of the State Chairman, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, disclosed that chairmanship and Councillorship primaries will hold on February 14, and 11, respectively ahead of the April 17 LGA election. He said the party is fully prepared for the election and advised all aspirants to see the primaries as a family affair.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), has extended the deadline for the conduct of party primaries. The umpire has also debunked reports that this move might be to favour the PDP. The RSIEC Chairman, Retired Justice George Omereji, made the clarification at a stakeholders engagement in Port Harcourt on Thursday. He said: RSIEC is not favouring PDP ahead of the Rivers Council election. The PDP could not conduct it’s primaries within the initial stipulated time as a result of the increasing Covid-19 Cases in the state”.

He further stressed that the PDP wrote the Commission for an extension and that the February 11th and 14th primaries fall within the calendar for the conduct of the Election.
