The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced an intensified campaign to restore internal cohesion and forge expansive political coalitions as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
In an authoritative briefing with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chief Emmanuel Ogidi, the Caretaker National Vice-Chairman (South-South), affirmed the party’s unwavering commitment to fortifying Nigeria’s democratic framework. He positioned the PDP as a vital counterbalance to the current administration, asserting that the party is undergoing a period of significant repositioning despite contemporary internal friction.
Acknowledging the presence of “pockets of trouble” within the party’s hierarchy, Chief Ogidi maintained that these disagreements would not impede the PDP’s overarching mission. He emphasised that the party remains the only “viable opposition” capable of safeguarding the nation against the risk of becoming a “banana republic.”
“We are resolute in our cause,” Chief Ogidi stated. “We understand our role in the democratic process and, because of that, we shall not disappoint the populace. We are determined to do whatever is necessary to ensure the survival of democracy in Nigeria.”
A central pillar of the PDP’s renewed strategy involves reaching out to influential figures across the political spectrum. Chief Ogidi revealed that the party is prepared to engage with members of various political organisations, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to consolidate a formidable front.
The Vice-Chairman warned that without a unified and robust opposition, the country risks facing increasingly severe socio-political challenges. “We intend to reach out to anyone reachable,” he noted. “We must examine what can be salvaged and integrated from other parties to prevent further national decline.”
Turning his attention to the current administration, the PDP chieftain levelled a sharp critique against the APC, accusing the ruling party of prioritising electoral optics over the substantive duties of governance. He questioned the propriety of an administration that, less than two years into its tenure, appears more occupied with future campaign cycles than with resolving the immediate hardships facing the citizenry.
Chief Ogidi concluded by outlining the PDP’s primary objectives for the 2027 horizon: the protection of democratic institutions, the promotion of national unity, and the presentation of a credible, sophisticated alternative to the status quo. He warned that the continued erosion of institutional integrity could lead to national instability, a scenario the PDP pledges to prevent through strategic reform and public engagement.
