The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially postponed the planned inauguration of its newly elected State Executive Council. The decision follows the tragic and sudden demise of Mr Karamo Yesiro, who had been elected as the party’s Assistant Publicity Secretary only hours prior to his passing.
Mr Yesiro reportedly passed away on Wednesday, shortly after participating in the Lagos State APC Congress held on Tuesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan. His election to the state executive was intended to mark the beginning of a four-year term of service to the party.
The Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Seye Oladejo, confirmed the loss in a poignant statement released on Wednesday. He described the development as a “profound shock” and a significant blow to the party’s communications and leadership apparatus.
“Yesiro’s passing is a painful and tragic loss to our great party at a time when his energy, commitment, and passion for progressive politics were most needed,” the statement read. “Having just been entrusted with the responsibility of serving in the State Executive Council, he embodied dedication, loyalty, and an unwavering belief in the ideals of our party.”
Party stalwarts and supporters, unaware of the postponement, had gathered at the APC Secretariat in Acme, Ogba, on Thursday morning. Upon learning of the shift in schedule, party leaders led a high-powered delegation to the deceased’s residence to pay a condolence visit to his family.
The Tuesday congress that saw the election of the late Mr Yesiro was a high-profile event attended by the cream of Lagos State’s political leadership, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa. Also in attendance were former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and GAC Leader Prince Tajudeen Olusi.
The new executive council, which is now expected to be inaugurated on Friday, is led by Mr Cornelius Ojelabi as State Chairman. The full leadership team includes:
Deputy Chairman: Moshood Olanrewaju, Secretary: Adeola Jokomba, Assistant Secretary: Azizat Mariam, Publicity Secretary: Seye Oladejo, Vice Chairman: Babajide Sunday, Woman Leader: Shola Eletu and Organising Secretary: Ayodele Adewale
The presence of various factions and high-ranking officials including former governorship aspirants and veteran senators at the congress highlighted a significant move towards party cohesion ahead of the new administrative cycle.
The postponement of the inauguration is seen as a mark of respect for the late Assistant Publicity Secretary, whose vacancy the party will eventually need to fill in accordance with its internal constitutional protocols.
