The Kwankwasiyya Movement has formally declared its support for the nascent political alliance between its progenitor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Mr Peter Obi. The partnership is set to be consolidated under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

This endorsement follows the recent reception of both political heavyweights at the NDC headquarters in the nation’s capital. The event occurred shortly after Mr Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the NDC.

In an extensive communiqué released via the social media platform X on Friday, the Kwankwasiyya Movement characterised the partnership as a “reflection of a new direction” for the Nigerian state. The group noted an “unprecedented acceptance” of the collaboration amongst the citizenry, suggesting it holds the potential to fundamentally alter the nation’s political trajectory.

The statement read: “For the first time in recent political history, Nigerians are witnessing the realistic possibility of a broad-based political understanding capable of bridging the long-standing regional divide in opposition politics.”

The movement’s declaration comes amidst a flurry of criticism from segments of the Northern political establishment. Supporters of the alliance claim these “selective attacks” are orchestrated attempts to undermine the union before the 2027 general elections.

The movement was quick to defend Senator Kwankwaso’s pedigree, asserting that his political influence is “organic” and built upon decades of grassroots engagement rather than “media manufacture” or federal patronage. They argued that the Senator’s disciplined structure in the Northwest, combined with Mr Obi’s significant appeal among the youth and urban demographics in the South, represents a formidable national force.

Addressing the economic and security challenges currently besetting the Federation, the Kwankwasiyya Movement urged detractors to eschew “petty elite propaganda” in favour of mature, issue-based debate.

Key tenets of the Movement’s position include: National Unity: Viewing the alliance as a vehicle for democratic consolidation. Grassroots Foundation: Emphasising the “trust of millions” over elite endorsements. Inclusion: Calling for a “credible alternative” to the current political status quo.

“Democracy thrives through coalition-building and healthy competition,” the statement concluded, “not through orchestrated narratives targeted at individuals whose growing acceptance threatens established interests.”

The movement has called upon all political stakeholders to prioritise the national interest as the country moves toward a pivotal electoral cycle.
