Abuja, Nigeria — In a major development following the end of the Rivers State political crisis, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he spoke with Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Wednesday, just before President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday night, Wike addressed public speculation about Fubara’s whereabouts, arguing that there is no law requiring the governor to resume his duties immediately. Wike’s revelation of direct contact with the governor provides the first insight into the private discussions that preceded the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers.
A Sign of Peace and Unity
“As I speak to you, as of yesterday, I spoke to the Governor (Fubara). I told him I was leaving that night to come back, and he told me he was leaving this morning,” Wike said.
When asked who initiated the call, Wike dismissed the question as irrelevant. “It’s not important who called,” he stated, emphasizing that what matters is the restoration of peace and the state’s collective interest.
Wike pointed to the Rivers State House of Assembly’s actions as a sign of progress, stating that the legislature’s resumption of sitting shows a unified front. “You can see peace; you can see we are prepared, for the interest of the state. Let’s move forward,” he said, signaling a new chapter of collaboration and stability for the state.
