Port Harcourt, Nigeria — In a dramatic and emotional final address, Rivers State’s outgoing Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, made a passionate plea for unity today, urging the people to “transcend bitterness, political rivalry, and self-interest” for the sake of the state’s future. The powerful message was delivered at an Inter-Denominational Church Thanksgiving Service, a cornerstone of the state’s transition back to democratic governance.
Reflecting on his six-month tenure, Ibas spoke of a state “torn by divisions, instability, and broken trust” before the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He credited divine intervention and the support of the President and the people for the “relative stability we enjoy today.”
A Stern Warning to Political Actors
The Admiral’s tone grew firmer as he addressed the political class directly, issuing a stark warning: “No political victory or personal gain is worth the blood of any Rivers citizen.” He admonished them to “shed their swords,” emphatically stating that the prosperity of Rivers State must be placed above all personal and partisan interests.
Ibas concluded his address by urging the state’s youth not to be used as tools of violence, calling on them to channel their energy into building a peaceful and prosperous future. The service ended with prayers for the continued peace and prosperity of Rivers State, as the administration’s legacy of “love and peace” hangs in the balance.
