Labour: APC says Wike should eschew gunboat politics

Recent faceoff between the leadership of  labour Union and the Rivers State Government, has attracted mixed reactions from stakeholders, including the All Progressives Congress, APC.

While commending NLC, for its decision to halt further actions to press home her demands, the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has through a press Statement by the party’s Spokesman, Ogbonna Nwuke, tasked the state government to  “have a human face’, with a kinder and responsive system that is understanding, just and fair”.

In the statement released today, September 8, the APC said: “We have heard that the Rivers State Government and labour have settled their differences. It took last minute efforts which lasted late into the night to avert a crippling strike.

‘We believe that the NLC and its associates demonstrated uncommon maturity and discipline in allowing last minute discussions. Accordingly, the breakthrough recorded at the late night meeting is plainly as a result of the unique sacrifice made by labour in the overall interest of the state and nation.

“While we welcome the resolutions reached at the end of that very crucial meeting, it is our expectation that the Rivers state Government under the watch of Governor Nyesom Wike would fulfill its promise to workers.

“Government must have a human face  and all of us have a responsibility to evolve for mankind, a kinder and responsive system that is understanding, just and fair. We hope that the Governor of Rivers State  would learn lessons from this. His administration had no reason whatsoever to threaten sons and daughters of Rivers State who are part of the labour movement; and who are rendering essential services to the government and good people of Rivers State.

“We thank labour leaders for doing the needful. They have proved that the interest of the working class was more paramount  in the decision they took to call out workers. We call on the Wike administration to eschew its gunboat politics. It has no place in egalitarian society and no place in a society that hopes to embrace a system of social responsibility. We cannot afford to have government which abhors the spirit of our Constitution while pretendng  to act under the guise of promoting the Rule of Law”.
