Governors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, are seriously plotting to frustrate the purported ambition of the Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon,. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
Amaechi is reportedly eyeing the presidential ticket of the party. If he snatches it, he would be taking over the reins of power from President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure ends in 2023.
The APC has finally agreed to host its national convention in December. A zoning formula which would be tabled during the event would be unveiled in a couple of days.
Associates of the Minister dream of the presidential ticket. They think the North would come solidly behind Amaechi and reckon the matter of who succeeds Buhari is already settled.
But, like their colleagues in the PDP, the APC Governors are hoping, if their scheme goes through, that one of them would grab the ticket.
Already, the plan of the PDP Governors has come into the open, with sources saying that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Bukola Saraki, a former Senate president are likely to face hard times.
Somehow, the plan by Governors of the APC to ensure for their own purpose, that a serving governor replaces President Buhari is being hatched.
A well placed source told the Port Harcourt Telegraph, “It does not matter on what side of the political divide the governors find themselves, the agenda is the same.
“No one who is not serving as a State governor would lay hands on the presidential ticket either in the PDP or APC.”
Insiders say the plot by the APC Governors is thickening by the day. Amaechi isn’t the only one who is in for a surprise.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, one of the leaders of the APC who is enjoying the support of Amaechi’s bitterest opponent in Rivers, Senator Magnus Abe might be in for a huge shock.
Of the 36 states, the APC controls 23 Governors. This number of Governors and the delegates that they control would pose a significant threat to any who fails to secure their support.
Several pressure groups with the ‘CRA’ acronym have emerged in and outside Nigeria.
They are busy campaigning everywhere, particularly on the social media.
While coalitions are being built outside Rivers State, there are raging disagreements within the state that have not been addressed.
Abe’s group has created the semblance of a sharp division within the Rivers wing of the party.
