Youth Groups demand levies: Rivers Traders cry out

Traders doing business at Rumuepirikom Community in Ohio/Akpo Local Government Area, have decried incessant extortion from youths.

A shop owner who spoke with Africa Update on conditions of anonymity, said the situation faced by business owners in the area has worsened in recent times, as demand notices for levies and taxes have come unabated.

A copy of a demand notice dated May 16th and jointly signed by the President of Rumuepirikom Youth Movement, (RYM) Samuel John Amadi and Public Relations Officer, Eruchi Kingsley Ekani, stated that the demand for the payment of the levy is in conjunction with Rumuepirikom Kingdom Council, for the upliftment and development of the community.

The demand notice reads in part: ” To cement the cordial relationship existing between you and the host Community to serve you better, you are to support the Community with a development levy of five hundred naira (N500) per month for each store, beginning from 1st June, 2022.”

The traders are calling on the Nyesom Wike led state Government to urgently intervene.
