The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State has been thrown into mourning following the death of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, the younger brother of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Prince Ikechukwu, a prominent member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, passed away on Saturday, 30 May 2026. The Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, officially announced the passing in a public notice over the weekend.

In a formal statement issued by the kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, lamented that the late prince’s passing had left a profound void in both the royal family and the wider community.

The monarch characterised the deceased as an irreplaceable figure whose roots were deeply intertwined with the history, dignity, and enduring traditions of the ancient kingdom.

“He was, above all, a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family,” the Obi stated, reflecting on his brother’s life and contributions. “His passage leaves a void that words can only partially express. He walked among us with grace, and his memory shall endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.”

The news of the prince’s demise has elicited condolences from across the country’s political and social spectrum. Among those paying tribute was the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi.

The former Governor of Anambra State expressed “profound sorrow” and extended a message of solidarity to Dr Okonjo-Iweala, herself a former two-time Nigerian Minister of Finance as she navigates this deeply personal loss.

Writing on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, 7 June, Mr Obi stated: “My dearest sister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, it is with profound sorrow that I received the sad news of the demise of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, your younger brother.

“The loss of a younger sibling is an arduous and grievous experience. Please accept my sincerest sympathies, extended to you, the esteemed royal family of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, and all individuals who held Prince Ikechukwu in their affections.”

He added: “May God Almighty who called him home grant him eternal rest in His kingdom, and grant your family the fortitude to bear his irreplaceable loss. God Almighty bless your family always.”

The royal family indicated that further announcements regarding the funeral arrangements for the late prince would be communicated in due course, as community members and friends continue to visit the palace to pay their respects.
