World Maritime Day: Water Travellers Call For Better Security

Rivers State joined the world today to mark the world maritime day and water travellers navigating the Port harcout-Bonny and Port harcourt-Nembe waterways have lamented over the high level of insecurity on the water ways and have called on the government to tighten security on water ways and provide better travelling necessities such as, life jackets as the ones available for use are outdated.

They said they now travel with fear due to the presence of sea pirates which has made travelling by water very unsafe and pleaded with the government to take immediate actions as lives and properties are lost almost on a daily.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates the day yearly to provides an opportunity to focus attention on the importance of shipping and other maritime activities , as well as remind the public on the need to observe safety measures and pay attention to security.

The organization has been in existence for 70 years as the convention establishing IMO was adopted on 6 March 1948 and it entered into force 10 years later, on 17 March 1958, when the 21st State ratified the treaty. IMO’s first meeting was held in London on 6 January 1959, at Church House in central London, United Kingdom

The Theme for this year’s celebration is, Our Heritage-Better Shipping For A Better Future.
