Waterfront Residents Lament Over Poor Sanitary Condition

Waterfront dwellers in Rivers state, yesterday lamented over the poor sanitary condition of the waterfronts and called on the state government to come to their aid, stating that their biggest problem was lack of access to good toilet facilities.

They made this call in Port Harcourt yesterday, as Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark this year’s world habitat day.

Some residents of waterfronts in the state said the rainy season scares them, because once everywhere gets flooded, people dump feces in front of people’s houses.

They further stated that people from 3-4 communities make use of just one toilet, which they get to pay the sum of 20 naira every time they want to use it and pleaded with the government to help provides good toilets and drainage at the waterfronts.

The waterfront settlers also appealed to the rivers state waste management agency to improve its waste collection activities at the waterfront communities and provide waste bins at various spots so people can dispose their waste appropriately, so as to tackle the menace of flooding.

The world habitat day is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October world wide. The aim of this day is to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter, It is also aimed at reminding the world that we have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.

The theme for this year’s celebration was: Municipal Solid Waste Management with the slogan, “Waste-Wise Cities”.
