Abuja—The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has officially commissioned the commencement of a substantial infrastructure project at the Nigerian Law School, Bwari Campus, Abuja. The President flagged off the construction of a 600-bed capacity student hostel and, simultaneously, sanctioned the building of an additional auditorium to accommodate the nation’s burgeoning number of law students.

The hostel project, which will comprise two separate blocks, is set to provide 300 beds each for male and female students. This significant initiative is viewed as a major intervention aimed at mitigating the acute shortage of accommodation currently plaguing the esteemed institution of legal learning.

Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony on Monday, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, represented President Tinubu and confirmed that the initiative was the fulfilment of a promise made by the Head of State in December 2024 during the commissioning of staff quarters for the school.

“Today, we are here to fulfil the promise Mr President made. This shows that when you have good leadership, there is nothing difficult in achieving results. Mr President has shown leadership,” Minister Wike remarked.

The FCT Minister underscored that since the inception of the Abuja campus in 1997, no administration has intervened in the Law School’s infrastructure as substantially as the current government. Highlighting the President’s swift response to institutional needs, Wike recalled an overnight discussion concerning the limited capacity of the school’s existing auditorium.

“Last night, I tabled this before Mr President and he immediately approved the construction of another auditorium. This demonstrates that when issues are channelled properly, responsive leadership always provides solutions,” Wike added.

Wike also offered commendation to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, who stood in for President Tinubu, praising his commitment to advancing the justice sector. This included his role in initiating the digitisation of the FCT High Courts and mobilising support for the Law School.

Wike assured stakeholders that the hostel blocks would be completed within a strict 12-month timeframe, issuing a stern warning to contractors against delays or variations to the programme specification.

Earlier, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, lauded President Tinubu for approving the project, describing it as a landmark contribution to legal education in Nigeria.

“The construction of these hostels will go a long way in assisting the Nigerian Law School to fulfil its mandate. We are not taking this gesture for granted,” Professor Chiroma noted.

He concluded by praising Minister Wike for his consistent contributions across various campuses, including those in Port Harcourt and Yenagoa, adding, “Posterity will be kind to you when the history of legal education and the justice sector is written in Nigeria.” The event saw the attendance of senior officials from the FCT Administration, the Federal Ministry of Justice, and members of the Council of Legal Education.
