ABUJA, FCT – June 27, 2025 – Months of intense political animosity in Rivers State appear to have drawn to a close, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, publicly declared a resolution to their protracted rift. The breakthrough came after a pivotal meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Thursday night, Africa Update reports.

The high-stakes encounter, confirmed by Channels Television, brought together President Tinubu, FCT Minister Wike, suspended Governor Fubara, and key figures from the suspended Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule and other lawmakers.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the meeting, a visibly relieved Nyesom Wike confirmed the newfound accord. “We have all agreed to work together. Everything is over. We are members of the same political family,” Wike stated, flanked by Fubara and Amaewhule. He attributed the past disagreements to human nature, noting, “As humans, we have disagreements. We also have time to settle the disagreements. There is no more acrimony. Everything is over. It’s a day we have to thank the Almighty.”

On his part, Governor Fubara lauded President Tinubu’s timely intervention, emphasizing the critical need for stability in Rivers State. “It’s important that this day has come. What we need in Rivers is peace,” Fubara affirmed, pledging, “We shall do everything in our power to sustain peace in Rivers State.”

This significant development follows President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, which led to the suspension of the governor, deputy governor, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a period of six months. The crisis had plunged the oil-rich state into political uncertainty, raising concerns about governance and security.

Earlier on Thursday, suspended Governor Fubara had reportedly met privately with Speaker Amaewhule in Abuja, laying the groundwork for the broader reconciliation facilitated by the President. While full details of the comprehensive terms of the agreement remain sketchy, the public pronouncements from both Wike and Fubara signal a definitive end to the infighting that has characterized Rivers State politics for several months.

The reconciliation is expected to pave the way for a more stable political environment in Rivers State and allow the focus to shift towards governance and development.
