Support for Tinubu; Wike breaks silence at birthday event

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike, affirmed his resolute conviction in his political choices ahead of the 2023 presidential election, publicly declaring that he harbours “no regrets” regarding his crucial support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister made the pronouncement during an esteemed gathering held in the early hours of Saturday to commemorate his 58th birthday in Abuja. The event served as a testament to Mr. Wike’s extensive political influence, attracting a broad spectrum of political leaders, incumbent and former lawmakers, and long-standing associates spanning various party affiliations.

Addressing his guests, the FCT Minister clarified that his decision to back President Tinubu was entirely deliberate and rooted in deep personal conviction. He stated that his support was guided by an assessment of character and integrity, alongside a belief in the necessity of equity and justice in the national political architecture. Mr. Wike underscored his steadfast loyalty, noting that he stood by the President before, during, and after the electoral process.

He notably recounted his unique position as the only prominent figure from the main opposition party to have openly thrown his weight behind Mr. Tinubu at the time. According to the Minister, this pivotal decision was intrinsically linked to the principle of power rotation to the Southern region of the nation and his personal sense of fairness regarding national leadership.

The Minister further referenced the outcome of the 2023 elections in Rivers State as compelling evidence of his political stewardship and command. He highlighted the unique scenario under his supervision, wherein the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a victory in the presidential poll, while his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), triumphed in the governorship, National Assembly, State House of Assembly, and local government elections.

The celebration, hosted at the Minister’s residence, saw significant attendance, including a delegation of twenty-seven members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Mr. Martins Amaewhule. Dignitaries present also included the Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government, Hon. Allwell Ihunda, and numerous former and serving lawmakers and political allies.

Speakers heaped praise upon Mr. Wike throughout the night, describing him variously as a bold leader, a strategic achiever, and a politician whose impact transcends conventional party lines. Ambassador Desmond Akawor, Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and a former PDP Chairman, vividly described the Minister as the “naked wire” of Rivers politics, asserting that Mr. Tinubu had selected “the right product from the PDP” to work with.

Responding to the accolades, the Minister expressed profound gratitude to his political family and loyal supporters. He acknowledged their integral role in his political journey, confirming his personal fulfilment in working closely with his people for the progress of both Rivers State and the nation. He concluded with characteristic defiance, stating that political attacks and criticisms do not unduly bother him, but rather serve as fuel for his determination.

The proceedings concluded with special prayers offered for the continued well-being of the Minister and his family.
