A tragic road accident in the Eliozu area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Port Harcourt, on Monday night resulted in fatalities and injuries after a vehicle veered off the road and collided with pedestrians on a walkway near Unity Filling Station, Africa Update reports.
Initial reports indicated that a speeding vehicle lost control, leaving the roadway and striking multiple individuals. Witnesses at the scene reported that the vehicle also struck electric poles before coming to a halt.
An unconfirmed source at the scene stated that six individuals were found lifeless following the incident. However, the Rivers State Police Command has provided a revised casualty figure.
Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Rivers State Command, confirmed the incident, stating that three individuals were confirmed dead, while three others are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
“According to the report we have received, three people were confirmed dead, and three others are in the hospital receiving treatment,” SP Iringe-Koko stated. She further added that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the accident. The involved vehicle has been impounded and is currently at the police station.
The Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the incident to apprehend the driver and any other individuals involved.
