In a powerful press conference held at Obuama Community, Degema Local Government Area, on March 19, 2025, the South-South Chiefs, Elders, and Opinion Leaders Association of Nigeria expressed deep concern over the escalating political turmoil in Rivers State. The group, led by National Chairman High Chief (Dr.) Omubo Atuboinoma Harry JP, condemned the current situation, arguing that democratic principles were being undermined by autocratic tendencies.
High Chief Harry emphasized the importance of peace and justice, urging all political parties to prioritize the state’s stability. He cautioned against the dangers of political godfatherism, highlighting the need for a smooth transition of power. “Governance is turn by turn,” he stated, referencing the Nigerian constitution and advocating for former Governor Nyesom Wike to allow Governor Sim Fubara to fulfill his tenure.
The group vehemently opposed the notion of a state of emergency, citing constitutional concerns and advocating for due process. They questioned the legitimacy of suspending a democratically elected governor and called for a fair and impartial resolution to the crisis. High Chief Harry lamented the withholding of federal allocations, highlighting the suffering of the oil-producing state. He also condemned the violent treatment of protesting women in Abalama, denouncing the actions of those responsible for maintaining peace.
Other speakers, including Elder Cyril Massey Harry, Mr. CS Cottrell, and National Secretary Amb. Clement Akanibo, echoed these sentiments. They raised questions about the root causes of the crisis, the constitutionality of the governor’s potential suspension, and the need for a thorough investigation by the federal government. Professor Prince Ordu proposed town hall meetings across all 23 local government areas to educate the public on the unfolding events.
The press conference culminated in a call for unity and a plea for divine intervention, with High Chief Harry thanking attendees for their commitment to peace and justice in Rivers State.
