The remains of the late Senator Barry Mpigi arrived in Nigeria through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday, met by a high-ranking delegation led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike.

The atmosphere at the airport turned profoundly somber as the casket, containing the body of the distinguished lawmaker, was offloaded. Senator Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East in the National Assembly and chaired the Senate Committee on Works, passed away in London on February 19, 2026, at the age of 64.

The repatriation was marked by moments of intense emotion. As the casket was solemnly transferred into a waiting ambulance, a woman believed to be the late Senator’s relative was observed in a state of deep grief. In a poignant scene that moved onlookers and dignitaries alike, she sat in the front of the vehicle, singing softly in mournful tribute to her late husband as the motorcade prepared to depart.

Minister Nyesom Wike, who described the late Senator as a “dependable ally,” stood alongside other prominent political figures from Rivers State to honour their departed colleague. Wike had previously led a delegation to London to offer condolences to the family, further cementing the bond of solidarity amongst the state’s leadership during this period of bereavement.

The late Senator Mpigi was widely respected for a legislative career spanning over a decade, characterised by what colleagues described as “firmness of character” and an “unwavering dedication” to public service.

His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has joined other national leaders in mourning, describing Mpigi as a “brother” and a “consummate politician” whose contributions to infrastructure development in Nigeria remain a vital part of his legacy.

The arrival of the remains marks the beginning of the home-going rites for the late statesman. Further details regarding the lying-in-state and interment are expected to be released by the family and the Senate leadership in due course.
