Leadership of the organised labour in Rivers State, says there is no going back on the planned strike action, earlier billed to commence by 12 midnight today.
Briefing newsmen after an emergency meeting in the state, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC; Rivers State, Comrade Beatrice Itubo, asked workers to sit at home until there demands are met.
She said it is important that members adhere to the instruction and boycott work in a bid to press home their demands.
The state chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Austin Jonah, urged his members to comply with the sit at home directive.
You will recall that labor and the state government have not been able to resolve issues bothering on welfare package and other benefits for the state workforce.
Comrade Itubo had alleged that Rivers state government has not implemented the National minimum wage and the payment of the arrears from April 2019 as approved by the Federal Government.
She explained that after meeting with the Joint action committee, the council has resolved to embark on an indefinite strike at the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum if the state government refuses to meet its demands.
Among several other demands made, there was a call for the immediate removal of the Rivers State Head of Service, Mr. Godwin Rufus, whom she claimed had retired from the State civil service
While decrying the inhuman treatment melted out on pensioners and retirees who served the state in various capacities, the state NLC Chairman added that the council will not relent in its demand for good welfare packages for workers in the state.
