The travails of the former Chairman of Asari Toru Local Government Council and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Hon. Ojukaye Flag Amachree took a twist yesterday, when the trial formally commenced at the Port Harcourt High Court.
Hon. Amachree was dragged to court following an alleged two count charge of conspiracy and murder of Mr. Smart Soberekon. The alleged murder according to the charge, was committed in Buguma City on April 11, 2015, when the victim was purportedly killed.
The accused had been incarcerated at the Port Harcourt prison for about two weeks, on the orders of Chief Magistrate Mr. Israel Agbesor, who had also declined the inspector General of Police Solomon Arase’s application requesting for the release of Hon. Amachree to enable the police conduct thorough investigation to unravel the killers of Mr. Soberekon.
The presiding Judge at the Port Harcourt High Court, Justice Emma Okpara at the formal commencement of the trial , fixed May 17, to rule on the bail application filed by the legal team of the former Chairman.
Justice Okpara said the matter was adjourned to enable the prosecution counsel to study and reply the bail application served by Hon. Amachree’s legal team on grounds of ill health and the enforcement of his fundamental human rights.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Emmanuel Aguma has hinted that the Rivers State Government has concluded plans to oppose Hon. Amachree’s bail application.
Hon. Amachree has however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
