The Rivers State House of Assembly has fixed August 1, 2017 to discuss reports of the House committee which investigated petitions against an indigenous oil company, the Niger Delta Petroleum Resources, NDPR, by its host communities in Ahoada East and Emuoha Local Government Areas.
The joint committee of the House, headed by the committee chairman on Pubic complaints and petitions investigated activities of the company as it concerns environmental pollution, community development and unfair employment practices.
The chief whip of the House, representing Ogu/Bolo state constituency, Evans Bapakaye Bipi, stated that the committee recommended amongst other things , that the oil company should establish a Global Memorandum of Understanding, GMoU, with its communities.
His words ” That NDPR, within 60 days after the adoption of this reoort, commence the process of establishing a new GMoU.
“That the GMoU should among other things define the character and type of community development projects tabled for each community, ranging from education, employment, health, road, town halls and so on.
“That at least one person to represent the host communities should be included on the board of trustees, as a member. The membership should be rotational within the host communities.
“That NDPR should henceforth stop any business transaction with all contractors that fail to execute community projects .”
