Rivers State: Angry youths burn down houses, following murder of a Chief

Orokpor Village in Mgboshimini, Rumueme Community, Obio/Akpor Local Council in Rivers State, was besieged by angry youths yesterday,  following the gruesome murder of Chief Charles Minikwu.

Africa Update gathered that the invasion which led to the setting ablaze and destruction of property worth millions of naira, was as a result of the murder of Chief Minikwu, by unknown gunmen Friday night.

Our source revealed that the gunmen stormed the venue of a meeting of titled chiefs in the community, and shot dead their target, who was the secretary of a faction of the community leadership.

Our source further disclosed that the community has had a protracted chieftaincy tussle and alleged that the assassination might be linked to it.

Houses destroyed were said to belong to those on the opposing side of the chieftaincy tussle. Meanwhile,  many residents have abandoned their homes.

Rivers State Police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Nnamdi Omoni, While confirming the incident, assured that culprits would be apprehended as investigation has begun.
