Rivers Retirees Stage Protest Over Unpaid Gratuities

Some Rivers State pensioners have yet again staged another protest at the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The pensioners who are demanding for their 4-year unpaid retirement benefits are also asking that the Contributory Pension Law be reviewed.

The leader of the group Mr Lucky Atteh while making their position known said, most of them has lost their lives because they could not pay their medical bills.

Mr Atteh said, “Yesterday one of us died also. Most of us that are retired, we have ailments, diabetes, hypertension which needs daily medication. People are not even able to meet up their daily medications again”.

Responding to the protesters, the chef whip of Rivers State House of Assembly, Evans Bipi said the process of abrogating the law was on and assured them that the law would be in place soon.

However, some of the retirees who spoke to newsmen expressed doubt that the lawmakers will come out with a positive result soon.
