PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State – July 3, 2025 – The Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum has issued a strong call for the immediate lifting of the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State. This appeal comes swiftly on the heels of the recent reconciliation between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, facilitated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Addressing a media briefing in Port Harcourt today, the Forum articulated profound dismay over the political crisis that has gripped the state for months, describing it as a “sad development that deeply wounded the soul of our dear state and cast an undeserved shadow on our collective image, unity, progress, and prosperity.”
While extending their profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his timely intervention, the elders specifically commended both Governor Fubara and Minister Wike for demonstrating “maturity and courage” in embracing the path of peace.
“This was exactly what we, the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum, had earnestly sought from the very beginning,” stated Alabo Dr. Gabriel Toby, Acting Chairman of the Forum. “Unfortunately, our initial efforts were not heeded, which necessitated our formal appeal to Mr. President.”
Dr. Toby further emphasized that the Forum’s involvement was driven exclusively by a patriotic commitment to safeguard the essence and dignity of Rivers State. “We seek no personal gain, political favour, or reward. Our sole desire is to see our state thrive, with its leaders united and working together for the common good of all,” he affirmed.
Despite the specific terms of the reconciliation remaining undisclosed to the public, the elders expressed optimism that the peace process is firmly anchored within the framework of the 1999 Constitution and in full compliance with the rule of law.
With the apparent restoration of peace, the Forum urged the relevant authorities to promptly reinstate all suspended democratic structures. “It is our considered view that the State of Emergency imposed on Rivers State be lifted and all suspended democratic structures fully restored,” the statement emphatically concluded.
The Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum also called upon all citizens of Rivers State to embrace this newfound season of peace, viewing it as a fresh beginning characterized by unity and shared purpose for the collective advancement of the state.
