Two critical Bills have been passed into law by the Rivers State House of Assembly, on September 20, according to information made available to Africa Update.
The Bills are the Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill 2024, and Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill 2024, and were passed to law, by the Lawmaker, sduring the regular sitting at the Hallowed Chambers, presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Victor Oko-Jumbo.
The Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill 2024, was presented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Orubienimigha Timothy, and the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill 2024, was presented by the Leader of the House, Hon Sokari Goodboy Sokari, and was subsequently followed by second and third readings on the floor of the Assembly before both bills were passed into law
In his remark, the Speaker commended the sponsors, citing the Transport Bill’s potential to tackle “one chance” issues through commercial vehicle profiling, enhancing security, revenue, and service delivery. He praised the Emergency Management Bill as timely, domesticating NEMA’s efforts to address natural disasters, fires, accidents, and emergencies in the state.
Recall that public hearings had been held for both bills where stakeholders and the public made relevant inputs leading to the outcome of what was presented in today’s plenary.
Thereafter the House adjourned sitting to Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
