RC PH Garden City harps on eradicating Polio through collective action, vaccination, vigilance

As the world marks the 2025 Polio Day, the need to eradicate the Polio virus has again been emphasised. This is because with efforts in top gear towards ending the Polio pandemic as led by Rotary International, the risk is still high, especially since it is still endemic in two countries – Pakistan and Afghanistan.

President Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden City, Rotarian Jessica Ijeoma Uzonwanne says if one child has Polio, every child under the age of five years is at risk as such the need for all to join the fight against polio.

“Today, we join Rotarians around the world to celebrate World Polio Day, a reminder of how far we’ve come and the crucial work still ahead. Though Rotary’s unwavering commitment, Polio cases have been reduced by over 99%, but until the world records zero, our mission remains unfinished. Every child deserves a future free from paralysis pain and preventable diseases.”

Rtn Jessica Uzonwanne noted that Rotarians has been in the forefront in raising awareness and advocacy about polio and called for more support for health workers in vaccinating children under five years against the Polio virus.

“Here in the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden City, our club continues to play its part through awareness campaigns, fundraising initiatives, and community partnerships that reach even the most vulnerable children.”

“We are inspired by the courage of health workers, volunteers, and every Rotarian who gives their time, resources, and voices to this noble cause.” She says.

The focus for the 2025 World Polio Day is eradicating polio through collective action, vaccination, and vigilance.

“As we commemorate this day, I call on all parents, guardians, and community leaders – please allow children to be vaccinated. Polio has no cure, but it can be prevented through timely immunisation.

By saying yes to vaccination, you’re saying yes to health, yes to hope, and to a brighter future for our children.” She added.
