Prof. David N. Ogbonna Enstooled as Aguiyi I of Aririamiri Eberi

The atmosphere in Umuelechi-Eberi was one of profound cultural resonance yesterday, Wednesday 7th January, as the community gathered to witness the historic chieftaincy installation of the distinguished academic, Professor David N. Ogbonna.

In a ceremony that blended scholarly prestige with the ancient traditions of Omuma Local Government Area, Professor Ogbonna was formally conferred with the title of Aguiyi I of Aririamiri Eberi. The event drew a vast assembly of dignitaries, traditional rulers, and academic colleagues, all of whom converged on the Professor’s hometown to celebrate a man whose life has been defined by excellence and service.

The installation rites, which commenced at 11:00 am, were conducted with the solemnity and pageantry befitting such a high honour. The title of ‘Aguiyi I’, symbolising the strength and guardianship of the lion, was bestowed upon the Professor in recognition of his significant contributions to the intellectual and social fabric of the region.

The sounds of traditional horns and the rhythmic pulse of Eberi drumming provided a vibrant backdrop as the new Chief was adorned in his ceremonial regalia. The installation is seen by many as a vital endorsement of local leadership, merging the wisdom of the academy with the custodial responsibilities of traditional governance.

Following the formal enstoolment, Chief (Prof.) David N. Ogbonna expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the community and guests. He noted that the honour was not merely a personal achievement but a call to greater stewardship. “To be recognised by one’s own people in such a magnificent fashion is the highest honour a man can receive,” he remarked during the reception.

As the festivities concluded late into the afternoon, the consensus among attendees was that the Omuma LGA has gained a formidable advocate in its traditional council. The successful ceremony marks a significant chapter in the history of Umuelechi-Eberi, cementing Professor Ogbonna’s legacy as both a scholar and a pillar of his community.
