President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has issued a formal statement of condolence to the globally acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, following the heartbreaking loss of their twenty-one-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
The tragedy, which has sent shockwaves through the nation’s intellectual and medical communities, prompted the President to speak both as a statesman and a parent. In a poignant message, he described the loss of a child as one of the most devastating forms of grief, offering his deep empathy and solidarity to the family during this dark hour.
President Tinubu paid tribute to Ms Adichie’s standing as a “literary icon,” noting that her work has brought immense global distinction to Nigeria. He expressed his hope that the family might find strength in the support of a mourning nation.
As the federal government offers its support, the Lagos State Government has moved to address the public discourse surrounding the incident. Whilst a high-level investigation into the circumstances of the child’s passing remains ongoing, the administration has urged the citizenry to remain calm and refrain from inflammatory speculation.
Government officials emphasised that due process will be meticulously followed to safeguard the rights of all residents. The administration further stated that the primary objective of the current inquiry is to ensure that such a tragedy does not recur within the State’s healthcare system.
The findings of the investigative panel are expected to be made public as soon as the process reaches its conclusion. For now, the focus remains on a rigorous review of medical protocols and providing the bereaved family with the privacy required for their mourning.
