The menace of illegal refineries have been attributed to the activities of a cartel made up of politicians, local community leaders and security operatives.
This development was made known to newsmen by the Assistant Commander General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mrs. Helen Amachree, who stated that over 1,500 illegal refineries have been recently destroyed in Rivers State.
Further reiterating that the issue of illegal hunkering is deep in Rivers State. “In Rivers State alone in the last 2 years, Â we have secured about 28 convictions with over 200 convicts serving various jail terms.
“In Akwa Ibom 28 convictions with about 82 currently serving various jail terms. It is not enough, but we are still trying because there are so many challenges.” she disclosed.
