Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recently held a dinner meeting with the suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in the United Kingdom (UK). This meeting followed a prior gathering with his political allies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday.
The information was shared by Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, via his Facebook page, who stated that “Wike left Nigeria on Sunday night after visiting his political friends and associates in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.”
These suspended lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, are currently in the UK for a legislative capacity-building program. Their suspension, along with that of Governor Siminalayi Fubara for six months, was reportedly ordered by President Bola Tinubu due to security concerns arising from the ongoing political crisis between Wike and Fubara. This alleged presidential intervention followed a declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Amaewhule had previously announced the commencement of the 10th Rivers Assembly Legislative Tour of the United Kingdom on Friday, claiming the tour would enhance the members’ capabilities by exposing them to international best practices.
The political turmoil between Wike and Fubara has significantly impacted the state’s political landscape, including the operations of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
