The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced a significant advancement in the leadership and rank-and-file structure of the Nigeria Police Force, approving the promotion of one Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), two Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and over 26,000 Inspectors.
The decision was ratified during the Commission’s 3rd Plenary Meeting held on Thursday, 29 January 2026. Chaired by DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), the Commission emphasised that the elevations were the result of a rigorous, merit-based selection process involving both written examinations and oral interviews.
Leading the list of promotions is Assistant Inspector-General Funsho Adegboye, who has been elevated to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General (DIG). Until this appointment, DIG Adegboye was the AIG in charge of the Police Mobile Force (PMF). His distinguished career includes international service with United Nations missions in Kosovo, Liberia, Timor, and Somalia, alongside command positions in Edo State and the Force Intelligence Department.
Additionally, the Commission promoted two Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General (AIG):
AIG Danjuma Aboki: Formerly the Commissioner of Police for the Imo State Command. AIG Dansabo Idi: Previously the Acting AIG in charge of Research and Planning at Force Headquarters, with a background spanning command roles in Lagos, Kaduna, and the Police College.
In what has been described as a landmark move for career progression, the PSC approved the promotion of 26,119 Inspectors to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police II (ASP II).
According to Torty Njoku Kalu, Head of Protocol and Public Affairs at the PSC, these promotions recognise the “outstanding performance” of the officers in the recently concluded Departmental Selection Board Examinations. This mass elevation is intended to address stagnation within the lower rungs of the officer cadre and bolster morale across the federation.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd) reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to transparency and global best practices in human resource management.
“These promotions are a testament to the hard work, competence, and dedication of our officers,” the Chairman remarked. “I urge them to see their new ranks as a call to greater service, higher responsibility, and redoubled commitment to the safety and security of our nation.”
The Chairman further extended his appreciation to the PSC Standing Committee on NPF Matters, led by DIG (Dr.) Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), for their thoroughness in overseeing the examination and interview phases.
