PDP Caretaker Committee Reschedules National Convention Amidst Zonal Dissolutions

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caretaker Committee, aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a rescheduling of the party’s proposed national convention. The event, originally slated for late March, has been shifted to the 29th and 30th of March 2026.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Tuesday by the Caretaker Committee’s Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, following a pivotal meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC).

Mr Mohammed explained that the adjustment from the previously announced dates of 28th and 29th March followed extensive deliberations. Beyond the timing of the convention, the committee reached several “far-reaching” decisions, most notably the immediate dissolution of the South-West, North-West, and Plateau State zonal committees.

New caretaker committees are expected to be appointed shortly to oversee the affairs of these zones. “The timetable approved for the congresses at the state, zonal, and ward levels will take effect as approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC),” Mr Mohammed stated.

Addressing the delay in announcing the National Convention Planning Committee, the spokesperson emphasised a desire for reconciliation. The leadership is reportedly conducting wide-ranging consultations to ensure the convention is “all-inclusive,” providing space for returning party members and those who have recently expressed renewed interest in the party’s activities.

Ahead of the committee’s closed-door session, the Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, dismissed reports of internal friction. “There is no division in the PDP under my leadership. The party is united,” he asserted, adding that the committee is operating strictly within the confines of the PDP constitution and national electoral laws to ensure a transparent process.

These developments occur against a backdrop of significant legal turbulence. On Friday, the Federal High Court in Ibadan nullified the PDP National Convention held on 15 November 2025. That previous convention, endorsed by the PDP governors, had seen the emergence of Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as National Chairman.

However, the court’s ruling restrained Mr Turaki and his colleagues from parading themselves as national officers. This has emboldened the Wike-aligned faction, including Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu—who maintain that their caretaker mandate remains the legitimate path for the party’s transition.

The leadership crisis reached a head in December last year when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declined to recognise either faction, leading to a flurry of litigations as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections. In response to the latest court order, the Turaki-led faction, through its spokesperson Ini Ememobong, confirmed that its legal team has been instructed to file an appeal and explore all available legal remedies.
