Over 1000 landlords, residents of Railway Quarters cry out to Governor Wike

No fewer than 1,000 Residents and Landlords of Railway Quarters, along the Azikiwe road, opposite the Federal and State High Court Complex, besieged the Government House, with a protest letter and placards to express their displeasure over the sudden eviction notice given to them by the Railway Property Corporation, RPC.

In an exchange with newsmen, the residents stated that the RPC, suddenly marked their houses for demolition stating that it was in the Railway right of way without prior notice and gave them 20 days to leave.

While channeling their complaints through Human Right activist, Bar. Higher King, disclosed that they were given a 20 day period to evacuate the premises between 11th of May to 31st May.

While talking to newsmen Bar. Higher King stated that it’s unethical for the RPC to make such requests without due consideration and also settlement. Stressing that these individuals who have built houses and have lived for many years, are entitled to a form of re-settlement and also ample time to leave.

Speaking further, he queried the rationale behind the eviction notice which was served to only the private residents. He wondered why those private houses were marked for demolition on the grounds of being on the Railway right of way and not the neighboring company BUA that shares the same land area.

Bar. higher king, called on the Governor, Nyesom Wike, the Federal Government and Ministry of transyportation to intervene in the matter as he sees a breach of the rights of the residents of the Railway Quarters, by the Railway Property Corporation and foul play, pointing at a sinister plot by BUA to take over the marked Areas.
