The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo State Command, has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of its Commandant, Gbenga Agun, who reportedly slumped on Thursday during a public function in Benin City.
Africa Update gathered that the Commandant, a prominent figure in the state’s security apparatus, collapsed moments after delivering his keynote address at an event organized by the International Association of World Peace Advocates, where he was slated to be honored with an award of excellence.
Collapse After Keynote
Sources present at the event, which was celebrating a peace ambassador, indicated that the tragedy unfolded rapidly. Agun, who was a guest speaker, concluded his address but quickly succumbed to an undisclosed medical emergency, slumping before an audience of dignitaries and peace advocates. The sudden collapse caused immediate alarm among attendees.
In a frantic effort to save him, the Commandant was immediately rushed to the Military Base hospital located on Airport Road for urgent medical attention.
However, the efforts proved futile. A source confirmed that Agun was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility. The doctor on duty reportedly confirmed that the Commandant was already “Brought In Dead” (BID).
Command Maintains Silence
The sudden and high-profile nature of Commandant Agun’s death has sent ripples of shock through the state’s security circle.
As of press time, the NSCDC Edo State Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the tragic incident. Efforts to obtain a response from the Command’s spokesperson, Mr. Efosa Ogbebor, were unsuccessful as calls placed to him were not answered.
Agun’s unexpected demise leaves a significant void in the leadership of the NSCDC in Edo State and has cast a somber cloud over the security community.
