NewsNigerians Mourn: Elder Statesman Edwin Clark Passes Away at 97 Nigeria has lost a prominent elder statesman and Niger Delta leader, Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, who passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97. The news was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Tuesday. Clark’s long and distinguished career spanned law, administration, and politics. He served as Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region (1968-1971), Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in Bendel State (1972-1975), and Federal Commissioner for Information (1975). He also served as a Senator(1979-1983). A staunch advocate for the Niger Delta, Clark was also a respected voice for national unity. He played a key role in mediating peace among communities and politicians in the region. His recent efforts included establishing a reconciliation committee, chaired by former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah, to address the political rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike. Clark’s death comes shortly after the passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo. Both men were influential figures in Nigerian politics and known for their contributions to the nation’s development.
