Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan Polio endemic countries – ljeoma Okoro

‘Polio eradication is Rotary’s no. 1 priority. Water and sanitation and the rest are just icing on the cake’.

These were words spoken by the past District Governor, Board member and Zonal coordinator at Rotary Global History Fellowship, Ijeoma Pearl Okoro .

She said Rotarians made a promise in 1985 to eradicate polio globally, at a time about 30,000 polio cases were recorded.  Though the tasked seemed impossible at the time, but she disclosed that the world is almost polio free except for few cases recorded in three countries.

These countries according to her include Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where about five cases have been recorded in recent times.

The Past District Governor charged Rotarians and other citizens to ensure that Nigeria is taken off the list of polio endemic countries, stating that Nigeria celebrated one year of no polio incident on August 20, 2017.

Her words: ‘we are doing the countdown to zero campaign. And the countdown to zero means we count up to the first year, we celebrate. We count up to the second year that is 24 months, we celebrate. Then by the time we get to the 24th month, we start counting down.
