The towering Corporate Office of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, was taken over by contractors from nine States in the Niger Delta Region, over alleged refusal of the Management to pay outstanding contract sum.
The major entrance to the complex was barricaded by the angry contractors today, when Africa Update visited the scene. While a canopy was also erected just outside the premises where contractors were seen, discussing in angry tones.
Some contractors who spoke with Africa Update on condition of anonymity, expressed displeasure at the alleged refusal of the NDDC management and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to pay them monies owed them, spanning between 2 years and 10 years.
They stressed that workers will not be allowed access into their offices except their demands are met. Most of these contractors said, they had to take loans to execute the projects and have been faced with untold hardships despite completing the milestones and in most cases the entire contract.
They called on the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government to urgently intervene by restructuring the Commission. The contractors called for the immediate sack of Senator Akpabio, who they claimed is behind the saga. It is however unclear for how long they intend to lay siege at the complex.
