Naira scarcity: Violent protest breaks in parts of Port Harcourt

Violent protest has broken in parts of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area the Rivers State capital on Friday morning, February 17, over the scarcity of Naira notes.

Africa Update reports that the protest started at the Mile three axis of Diobu and quickly spread to other parts of Diobu, causing residents and business owners to take to their heels.

kwerre Road, Mile Three, Mile Two and Mile One as well as Okija Street and Ikoku Spare Parts Market area have been taken over by hoodlums who according to a source, allegedly set ablaze a new generation bank.

Another source said boys were seen brandishing dangerous weapons along Urualla street and other adjourning streets. While some hoodlums are reportedly looting shops as well as robbing residents, commuters and motorists of their belongings.

Most motorists have abandoned their vehicles along the roads and fled to avoid falling prey to the hoodlums. At the time of this report, Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command, drawn from Mile One Police Division, Mile Three Police Division, Olu Obasanjo Police Division and the Octopus Crack Unit have been deployed along strategic points in Diobu to bring the situation under control.
