The Lagos State Government has formally extended its condolences to the acclaimed author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following the tragic passing of her infant son, Nkanu. In a move aimed at ensuring public accountability, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an independent and transparent investigation into allegations of medical malpractice surrounding the incident.
The bereavement, which has drawn expressions of grief from the highest levels of government, occurred on 6 January 2026 at a private medical facility in Lagos. The State’s intervention follows public concerns raised by Ms Adichie regarding the circumstances of her son’s clinical care.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Dr (Mrs) Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, the State Government described the loss of a child as “profound and irreparable.” On behalf of the people of Lagos, the administration assured the Adichie-Esege family of its unwavering commitment to establishing the truth.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct a rigorous inquiry into both the immediate and remote causes of the infant’s death. HEFAMAA has already commenced its proceedings, including a site visit to the healthcare facility in question.
The agency’s mandate includes:
- Assessing compliance with established clinical protocols and patient safety standards.
- Evaluating the professional conduct and responsibilities of the attending medical personnel.
- Collaborating with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to ensure a holistic review.
The Government reaffirmed its “zero tolerance” policy for professional misconduct, warning that any institution or individual found culpable of negligence would face the full weight of the law.
