Labour Unions, Rivers State Govt at war

The leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has described as provocative,  the queries issued to the Chairperson Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), Mrs. Beatrice Itubo, Chairman Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Austin Jonah and Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, Emecheta Chukwu after a meeting with Civil Servants at the State Seretariat yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the labor leaders, the Port Harcourt Zonal Chairman of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) , Azubuike Azubuike said the queries issued by the Head of Service was an affront on workers in the state.

Excerpts of resolutions of the labor leaders which was read by Comrade Azubuike  “The action of the Head of Service Rivers State Government is an affront on workers and has kept workers agitated.

“That the labor center hereby demand without delay, withdrawal of the purported query to leaders of labor center with apology within three days.

“That failure to withdraw the letter with apology, the labor center shall not be held responsible for any breakdown of industrial peace and harmony in Rivers State.

“Trade union congress Rivers State Council support the Rivers State Government especially in her effort at urban renewal.

“That the Trade Union Congress Rivers State Council shall partner with government in her positive developmental  efforts.

“That the economic recession is impacting negatively on the workers and residents of Rivers State.

“That the issue of contributory health insurance scheme is not acceptable by the workers and residents of Rivers State as this amounts to double taxation, as other contributory levies and schemes had failed.” he stated.
