Nigerian develops mobile app to end ‘Maths fever’

A Nigerian Woman recently made a breakthrough in the development of techniques to make Mathematics more interesting for Children. In this exclusive Interview with Africa Update,  Gladys Esue Briggs, Bayelsan by birth and Rivers by marriage, revealed the formula behind this invention.
Excerpts: .
What led you on this path?
Well first of all, I’ve worked in the British education sector for over 7 years now in various capacities including school support, school governor and classroom teacher. I realised that in developed countries, children are exposed to several ways of learning including e-learning. Because of my background in IT and my Maths degree, I decided to partner with a few others to close the learning gap for the Nigerian child.
When was it developed ? Is it a collaborative venture or solo effort?
I have collaborated with other Nigerian born education experts in Nigeria and in the diaspora to come up with this so we are team of Web developers, teachers, marketers, learning resource developers etc.
Is it exclusively for Bayelsa State or can children all over the world utilize it?
It is for Nigeria. That’s why I said in a video earlier that we shall be in PH, Lagos, Abuja etc. in the nearest possible time. It is built on the Nigerian Maths Curriculum developed by UBE and NERDC. We have also included topics from other international curriculums which aren’t available on ours.
What plans do you have for mathematics in the future?
Our future plan for mathematics is that the ‘Maths fever’ is completely eradicated from Nigerian children hence our slogan ‘mathematics incredibly simplified’. We want to make the Nigerian Maths curriculum a thing of pride and encourage teachers to embrace it and find different ways that they can support pupils to gain the understanding of maths concepts. We would like the government to support us by providing the necessary infrastructure and equipment, learning environment so that all children gain access to basic Maths skills to say the least.
Where and when was it launched ?
We launched in Yenagoa on the 12th of October at Domaris Hotel conference hall. We hope to be in Port Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja as soon as we can.
My first degree which is in Mathematics and Computer Science is from the university of Port Harcourt.
I have a second degree in Secondary Mathematics and IT from the University of South Wales
I have also got a Level 3 diploma in ‘Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools from Ystrad Mynach College. South Wales
So I currently teach Maths for different age groups.#
