The annual tournament, exclusively for students, culminated in a thrilling final on September 17, 2025, at the football pitch of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
The competition brought together various faculties in a display of athletic prowess and sportsmanship. Following the final matches, individual awards were presented to outstanding players in both categories, including prizes for the best player, best goalkeeper, best defender, and the highest goal scorer.
VC’s Personal Story on Academics and Sports
During the trophy presentation, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Okey Onuchuku advised the participants to take their studies seriously, stressing the importance of balancing academics with sporting activities. He issued a stern warning against cultism, stating that anyone caught would face rustication and prosecution.
The VC used his own experience as an example of successful academic and athletic balance. He revealed that he was not only the best-graduating student in Economics during his undergraduate days but also an accomplished footballer. He recounted winning a gold medal for the University of Port Harcourt at the 1988 NUGA games and another gold medal as a football team manager for the same university at the 2004 NUGA games.
