The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, has revealed a period of extraordinary institutional growth, marked by a surge in student enrolment and a sweeping modernization of the university’s infrastructure.
Speaking during a pre-convocation press briefing at his office, Professor Onuchuku disclosed that the university’s reputation for academic excellence has seen annual fresh student intake rise from 6,000 to over 9,000. He attributed this upward trajectory to a steadfast commitment to administrative stability, noting that the institution has successfully conducted convocation ceremonies for five consecutive years without interruption.
Africa Update gathered that the upcoming 44th Convocation Ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, 8 May, and Saturday, 9 May.
Central to the Vice-Chancellor’s report was the significant investment in the university’s technological and physical framework. To combat the challenges posed by erratic national power supply, the management has deployed solar energy systems to provide consistent electricity to administrative offices and student hostels.
Furthermore, the university’s digital transformation has reached new heights: ICT Modernization: The Information and Communication Technology Department has been upgraded to meet world-class Computer-Based Testing (CBT) standards, Artificial Intelligence: A dedicated Unit of Artificial Intelligence has been established to enhance research capabilities and student learning, and Distance Learning: The Institute of Distance Learning, now in its third year, has successfully attracted global interest, with students enrolling from various parts of the world.
Professor Onuchuku emphasized that “programme expansion and human capacity development” remain the core mantras of his administration. This focus on intellectual growth is evidenced by the promotion of over 180 academics to the rank of Professor since he assumed leadership.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the establishment of the Okey Onuchuku Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, an initiative stemming from his personal passion for scholarly research and societal harmony. He noted that donations received from friends and associates during his 60th birthday anniversary were utilised for the construction of the building which now houses the institute.
These achievements have been bolstered by strategic support from a diverse array of partners. Professor Onuchuku expressed profound gratitude to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Salvation Ministries, and various private individuals and organisations. Notable contributions include a solar-powered water project facilitated by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors.
As the university prepares for its 44th Convocation, the Vice-Chancellor’s briefing paints a picture of an institution in the midst of a renaissance. By integrating sustainable energy, cutting-edge technology, and a robust framework for staff promotion, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education is positioning itself as a premier destination for higher education in Nigeria and beyond.
Professor Onuchuku concluded by reaffirming his administration’s dedication to maintaining this momentum, ensuring that the university remains a citadel of learning that meets both local needs and international standards.
