Lokoja, Kogi State – Suspected gunmen reportedly attacked the family residence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, in her hometown of Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, on Tuesday.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s media office confirmed the incident in a statement released to journalists in Lokoja on Thursday, strongly condemning the “unprovoked attack.”
According to the statement, the armed men mistakenly believed the Senator was present at her grandfather’s house in Obeiba-Ihima and proceeded to vandalise windows. Prompt action by security operatives who responded swiftly, along with community members, reportedly repelled the attackers.
The statement further suggested a potential motive for the attack, linking it to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The media office called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately reinstate the Senator’s security details.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan recounted the events, stating that her younger brother was in Ihima with contractors assessing project sites she had facilitated for her senatorial district. “The unknown gunmen assumed I was the one in town and attacked my family house that night,” she explained. “Thankfully, the civil defence team and community members responded promptly and chased them off. A report was made at the police area command, and no one was hurt.”
The statement concluded by urging the public to remain calm and support the pursuit of justice for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, emphasising that her commitment to representing her constituents should not be met with violence and intimidation.
