A video has surfaced online of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, removing the official portrait of Celestine Omehia, who was recently derecognised as a former Governor of the State by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Omehia was prohibited from using the title “His Excellency”, and requested to refund over N650 million, paid to him by the State Government as entitlement.

The lawmakers had insisted that further recognition of Omehia as a former Governor of the State was in contravention of a Supreme Court Judgement.

Shortly after signing the order derecognising Omehia, Wike thanked the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi Owaji Ibani and his colleagues for having the courage to protect their legacy by doing the right thing.

He disclosed that he had called the Attorney General of the state for advise, when he received the resolution from the Lawmakers and the Attorney General had notified him that the House of Assembly had no power to overrule the Supreme Court to declare Omehia a former governor.

Wike stated that his predecessor, Chibuike Amaechi did not recognise Omehia as a former governor, but when he was sworn in as Governor, the House of Assembly decided that Celestine Omehia should enjoy the status of a former governor. Speaking further, he stressed that he had to comply with the resolution of the State Assembly, because he has never disrespected their decisions.
