Governor Fubara Pledges ₦100 Million as Rivers State Commences 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Appeal

The Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has donated ₦100 million to inaugurate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal, Africa Update reports.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during a poignant ceremony held at the Government House in Port Harcourt. This year’s commemoration, themed “Sacrifice and Unity: Honouring Our Heroes,” serves as a solemn tribute to the gallantry of the fallen and the steadfast service of retired personnel who have dedicated their lives to the preservation of the Nigerian state.

The Governor’s donation represents a remarkable 150 per cent increase over the ₦40 million contributed during the previous year’s appeal. This substantial uplift in funding underscores the administration’s commitment to moving beyond annual rituals toward tangible support for the veteran community.

Addressing the audience, Governor Fubara remarked: “This year’s celebration is deeply significant. These are individuals who have surrendered their youth and safety for the unity of this country. The least we can do is appreciate them not merely through the annual launching of an emblem, but by extending enduring support to those still amongst us and honouring the memory of the departed through every available means.”

In a move to address outstanding administrative commitments, the Governor urged the Nigerian Legion to promptly submit the names of fifty wards for employment within the state service. This directive seeks to honour a pledge made by the government in the preceding year, ensuring that the descendants of veterans are provided with stable livelihoods.

“It was an order I gave,” the Governor clarified regarding the employment scheme. “I expect the list to be forwarded to my office forthwith. Bring the names, and we shall ensure this commitment is fulfilled before we gather again next year.”

Furthermore, His Excellency provided a reassuring update on the construction of the Nigerian Legion’s permanent secretariat. He affirmed that the project is progressing steadily and is slated for completion within the coming year, providing the veterans with a dignified administrative headquarters.
