Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the 50.15-kilometre Port Harcourt Ring Road by October 2026.
Speaking during an extensive inspection tour on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, the Governor expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction, noting that the landmark project is nearing its final stages.
In a notable gesture of political bridge-building following recent mediation by President Bola Tinubu, Governor Fubara attributed the conception of the dual-carriage ring road to his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike.
Describing the Minister as the “originator” of the infrastructure, Governor Fubara referred to his predecessor as his “Oga” (leader) and praised his “very big ambition” for the development of the state.
“For me, this project is very important considering the person who conceived it,” the Governor remarked. “The Honourable Minister believed that if this project is delivered in record time, the people of Rivers will be satisfied with my administration. Notwithstanding current political developments, it remains my responsibility to ensure this vision is fulfilled.”
The Port Harcourt Ring Road, which was officially flagged off in July 2023, is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta. The 50.15-kilometre expanse is designed to connect six Local Government Areas, significantly easing traffic congestion within the state capital and its environs.
The project features:
-
Five Flyovers situated at critical intersections.
-
A major River-Crossing Bridge linking essential sections of the road.
-
Dual-Carriage lanes designed to international engineering standards.
Governor Fubara’s inspection commenced at the Refinery Junction in Eleme, traversing through Iriebe and Obio/Akpor before concluding at the river-crossing bridge.
Initially slated for completion within a 36-month window, the Governor noted that the project is firmly on track to meet its revised October target. He assured the public that the state government has maintained sustained funding to prevent any delays.
“From what is visible to everyone, a lot has been achieved,” Governor Fubara stated. “The contractors have provided assurances that, with the current momentum, we shall deliver this to the people by October. We are providing the necessary administrative push to ensure we fulfil our promise.”
The completion of the Ring Road is expected to stimulate economic activity by improving the movement of goods and services between the industrial hubs of Eleme and the residential heart of Port Harcourt.
