Governor Fubara Applauds Presidential Pardon for Ogoni 9, Hails National Honours for Ogoni 4

PORT HARCOURT— Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has wholeheartedly commended President Bola Tinubu for his landmark decision to grant a posthumous pardon to the infamous Ogoni 9 and confer prestigious national honours on the Ogoni 4, describing the move as a crucial step towards genuine reconciliation and enduring peace in the oil-rich region.

Governor Fubara expressed his profound appreciation following the unanimous ratification of the President’s decision by the Council of State during its meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday. The Governor views the action as a recognition of the “sacrifices and patriotism” of the thirteen individuals, collectively referred to by the state government as the “Ogoni 13.”

Promoting Peace and Development

The Ogoni 9; comprising the celebrated environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, alongside Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gboko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine, were granted the posthumous pardon for their “exemplary service to Nigeria and in particular to promote reconciliation within the Ogoni community.”

In the same vein, the Ogoni 4; Chiefs Albert Badey, Edward Kobani, Samuel Orage, and Theophilus Orage, were awarded national honours for their patriotism and commitment to reconciliation efforts.

Speaking from the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara stated that the presidential action would guarantee stability and accelerate progress in the state.

“The presidential pardon and national honours awards will promote genuine reconciliation, guarantee enduring peace and unity within the Ogoni communities, and also help accelerate sustainable development in the State,” Governor Fubara explained.

Reiterating the commitment of the Rivers State Government to the total reconciliation of all Ogoni people, Governor Fubara expressed optimism that the Federal Government’s gesture would bring renewed hope and restore confidence across the Ogoni communities.

He appealed directly to the people of the State, especially the Ogoni communities, urging them to view the decision as a significant step towards addressing their long-standing demands. The Governor emphasized that the government’s continued investment in the area serves as a testament to its commitment to the well-being and development of Ogoniland.

Fubara concluded by encouraging residents to “key into the policies and programmes of government at all levels to achieve the purpose of governance in the State, and Nigeria,” ensuring the benefits of this reconciliation effort translate into palpable community growth.
