Tributes have been paid to the late Senator Barinada Mpigi, the representative for the Rivers South East senatorial district, following his death at the age of 64. The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and the former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dakuku Peterside, have both expressed profound sorrow at the loss of a man described as a “leading light” of the state.
In a statement released yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, Governor Fubara expressed his shock at the news. Describing the late Senator as a brother and a “consummate politician,” the Governor remarked that Mpigi’s passing comes at a critical time when his experience and service were still deeply required by the people of Rivers State.
“The deceased lived a good life and impacted positively on the people,” the Governor noted, urging the Senator’s family and constituents to take solace in his enduring legacy. He further extended his condolences to the Nigerian Senate, where Mpigi held the influential position of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.
Dr Dakuku Peterside also joined in the tributes, describing the late Senator as a committed public servant whose contributions to the Niger Delta region would remain “indelible.” Peterside highlighted Mpigi’s reputation as a grassroots politician who maintained an unwavering connection with his constituents.
“I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of my friend and brother, Senator Barry Mpigi,” Dr Peterside said. “His death is a painful loss not only to Rivers South-East but to Nigeria as a whole. His passion for public service and humility distinguished him throughout his career.”
Senator Mpigi was a prominent figure in the National Assembly. Beyond his recent leadership of the Works Committee, he was notably appointed during the 9th Assembly to chair the joint Senate Committee tasked with investigating the complex issue of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.
As news of his passing spreads, many have reflected on his dedication to the ideals of representative democracy. Dr Peterside concluded his tribute by praying for the family’s strength during this period of “irreparable loss,” asking for the Senator’s soul to rest in perfect peace.
Senator Mpigi is survived by his immediate family and a grieving constituency that he served across multiple terms of public office.
